Cyber attacks, sabotage, geomagnetic super-storms (coronal mass
ejections (CME) from the sun, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the
high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon pose severe threats to our
electric power grid. The Congressional EMP Commission warned that up to 9 of 10 Americans
could die from starvation and societal collapse from a nationwide
blackout lasting one year.
That's not the worst of it: Decades of spent fuel rods from 200+ US nuclear reactors (not counting military units) are stored in huge cooling pools. Without power to keep the spent fuel pools covered with water, the water in the spent fuel pools may boil off, resulting in radioactive elements being released into the atmosphere that could be worst than that of several full-scale nuclear wars according to some. The purpose of Power Grid Defense Committee (PGDC) Alabama is to initiate activities to
secure the Alabama power grid from natural and man-made threats. We are
taking this step to formulate a plan of actions as both the state and
federal government is doing almost nothing to address one of the
greatest threat to life in case of catastrophic power grid loss. We seek
Alabama to join the small handful of states that have already decided to
harden their own power grids, spread this to other states, and use this
as leverage to seek federal activities to secure the grid nationally. We
intend to appeal to the federal government in parallel with the local
effort, and work with the State to formulate contingency planning or
risk mitigation plans. First we must educate the public, the industry,
and public officials. That is planned for the first day of our
Inaugural Power Grid Defense Conference.
The second day will be for key individuals to
hammer out a plan of action.
Huntsville is well poised to be a key community leading this effort due to our foundation in defense and space programs that will provides a well of expertise and the credibility needed to back this cause. Please consider attending, donate and/or volunteer to help us secure our future. See menu on the right.
